LibDems Sellout on Nuclear Power

Thursday, 13 May 2010

There were 5 Hustings during the election campaign in this constituency. At every single one Danny Alexander proudly promoted the LibDems opposition to new nuclear power stations and attacked me and the Labour Party for our stance (for the record I am "sceptical" about them, but won't rule them out).

A mere week after the election and the new Climate Change Secretary - Alexander's LibDem colleague Chris Huhne- has completely abandoned that pledge. See the Guardians report here.

Under the Coalition Agreement with the Tories the LibDems have agreed not to vote against plans for new nuclear power stations and will leave it to the market.

New politics or or just power at any price?

Glad to see you are still taking an interest in the constituency Mike.
Labour are still supporting the Administration Lib Dems/Indies in Highland Council however. What do you think of that Administration's sacking of the popular Provost of Nairn Liz MacDonald? 'Shabby Events' says the Courier today. You can get an idea of what the citizens of Nairn think in this facebook support group that has sprung up to help her. Liz was the people's choice regardless of her politics and the other three ConDem/Indy councillors in Nairn did the dirty on her

And how about the swimming pool? The Courier reported recently an Inverness Councillor as saying that the Community Centres in Inverness were all saved now after a meeting with the Administration, Nairn has been told we have to wait until February to find out the fate of the Swimming Pool however. Is there a two-tier consultation exercise going on here with Nairn being treated less fairly?

The Labour Party im INBS is fully behind the camapign to prevent the closure of both the Inverness Community Centres and Nairn Pool (the three Highland MSPs as well as myself put out press releases to that effect the week before the election). That view has been made clear to the Labour Councilllors on the administration and we shall see what happnes when the consultation programme comes back before the Council.

One of the points I made on my commnents on the budget "consultation" was that it risked putting community against community. Saving centres in one area at the expense of another is not an outcome I'd support. We should not be looking to make savings at the expense of vital local facilities; there are better palces to take action.

As for Nairn's provost, it seems to me to show the LibDems at their (usaul)worst. They are all for "new politics" until it runs into conflict with their own power and interests. They behave the same way in many councils across Scotland. Provosts need to show leadership for their communities and if that means being political from time to time, so be it.

I will be continuing to "take an interest" as you put it.

Hi Mike,
Good to see that you are keeping to your word about your nuclear power scepticism. Hope you are well and thank you for your input at the hustings.
It must be great to now have the freedom to be in opposition and the labour party will be able to become an effective opposition. You now have no competition in that role as poor Danny has now got to toe the Tory line. (and we thought it was poor George Macdonald that was stuck between the right wingers at Hilton!!!)
Do you remember at the FOE hustings that Danny gave me his committment that he would oppose any renewal of nuclear weapons? I think Val Sweeney noted it.
It was when I said that Danny would be my representative in the new parliament and therefore I wanted him to give that committment publicly and he did.
Amongst other things that he said, this is one thing which I intend to hold him to.
I accept your committment to oppose Trident and I hope you will use your influence to get the Labour party to change their policy (any resolutions coming up on it for conference).
Can you also evidence the giving of Danny's promise to me at the hustings?
We will see what he says in due course.
I see that you were successful in keeping Robin Harper out in your own constituency. He was our only hope in Scotland.
When you move up here, he may have a chance (2 votes less agianst him). When you are next up give me a call and we can discuss Danny's problems over a pint.
Regards
Donnie Macleod.

And here was I about to vote for you Donnie (no hope for yourself then!)

Glad to see you're still blogging Mike (The Gurn alerted me) and you've managed a few replies to comments that have been left for you

So now there is talk of a Green/Labour coalition "When you are next up give me a call and we can discuss Danny's problems over a pint"

Will we have any 'real' parties left?

Let's all go to the pub with Donnie and Mike, we can all go in Jim's massive landrover :-) Or failing that Danny's limo.
